The Foot Care Assistant programme started here in Jamaica, in the year 2000 as a result of our “National Diabetes Education Programme” in collaboration with our Ministry of Health.
As we travelled around the Island, we realised that the Foot Care component needed to be taken out and a separate course developed based on the common foot conditions that are being seen at primary care. Conditions such as: thick crusty nails, calluses, corns and various other foot problems. Hence the development of the Foot Care Assistant Level 1 course which was authored by me, Owen Bernard.
Since the start of this course in the year 2000, it has been exported to the following countries on request and sponsored by PAHO/WHO.
